Happy Mother's Day!

Mother and baby with Little Lotus Sleeping Bag

Dear Little Lotus moms,

Happy Mother's Day! We want to celebrate the global community of mothers today, and to honor the courage, love, and hope of the women we meet through our work. They remind us there is nothing more pure and selfless than the love a mother has for her child -- and the compassion moms have for helping other moms.

Thank you for being a part of our community, and our mission to help moms around the world. Each Little Lotus purchase goes towards helping a less fortunate mother, like Sujatha, a woman I met in India years ago. Sujatha lost three of her children, but had the courage to adopt a baby girl, and use her experiences to help other women in her village. She continues to be an inspiration to me, and you can read her story here.

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers, for the love they bring to this world!

Little Lot(US Weekly)

We're featured in US Weekly!

We're so excited to be featured in US Weekly April 11th edition! Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Chelsea Clinton, Heidi Klum, Stella McCartney, Arianna Huffington and many others contributed their handprints to the Touch Our Future artwork, created by incredible artist Drue Kataoka. This was the inspiration for our Lotus Signature collection, which has the hand traces of moms and babies in 14 countries - many of whom have been helped by the Embrace baby warmers.

'This NASA-devised fabric keeps babies snug. Mila Kunis contributed to the startup, which donates warmers for infants in developing countries.'

Bloomberg <3 Little Lotus

We're excited to share that Bloomberg Businessweek just gave Little Lotus a thumbs up in their most recent issue! Here's a peek at what's in the article:

Casey Little LotusThe Little Lotus Mom
"We had been using swaddles and had just switched over to sleep sacks, and that transition was really hard...I was skeptical. I put the Little Lotus sleeping bag on her, and I kid you not, she took a three-hour nap. She had been taking 30 to 60-minute naps.

I gave a Little Lotus to my cousin at her baby shower, and I told her the story of how [with the Little Lotus 1:1 model], Embrace incubators are literally saving the lives of babies around the world. All of these moms and grandmas and aunts and uncles were so touched. It’s an amazing way to connect with other moms around the world."

The Doctor getting Embrace warmers to Afghanistan
"My husband, who’s also a physician, and I looked at the [Embrace] technology...and we thought, this is very appropriate for hospitals in Afghanistan, which is notorious for poor grid access...you’re not going to be able to use a lot of medical technologies out there.

Through our nonprofit, we’ve deployed upwards of 75 to 80 of the warmers, which have been used more than 10,000 times."

The Results Of Our Sleep Study Are In!

Sleeping baby in Little Lotus Swaddle

We're excited to share the results of a sleep study we just conducted! Here's a snapshot:

  • 8 out of 11 babies slept more when using Little Lotus Baby vs other products
  • Babies slept 4 hours longer on average when using Little Lotus Baby

Sleep is crucial to a baby’s brain development. Studies have shown that babies with more sleep had better cognitive development. And, growth hormones are released during sleep to help your baby grow big and strong.

Little Lotus Baby products help your baby sleep better, by using a special technology to keep them at the perfect temperature. Our super soft fabric absorbs your baby’s body heat when they are too hot, and resupplies it when they are cold. Fewer temperature fluctuations allow for better sleep.

Super cool technology, but we know many of you are thinking: Does it actually work?”

We put our products to the test with 11 babies under the age of 1. For this informal study, over the course of 5 days, moms were asked to record every sleep cycle using their existing swaddles or sleep blankets. The babies then switched to the Little Lotus swaddle or sleeping bag for 5 days.

And the results?  Here’s what we found:

  • 8 out of 11 babies slept more while using Little Lotus Baby products
  • These 8 babies slept 4 hours longer on average
  • 9 out of 11 moms were less worried about their baby being too cold with Little Lotus Baby products

We hope Little Lotus Baby brings peace of mind and extra rest to tired parents, both through our technology...and through knowing that every purchase helps to save a baby in a developing country. Happy sleeping!

#MamaNeedsSleep Contest & Additional Sleep Tips from Dr. Harvey Karp

Following up to Sleep Awareness Week last week, we are launching the second part of our #MamaNeedsSleep campaign! As new parents you probably are not getting enough sleep. The average parent gets 6 hours of sleep, and that is just not enough. Little Lotus has partnered with Dr. Harvey Karp, baby sleep guru and author of the best-selling book, The Happiest Baby on The Block, for a contest to help parents get some much needed rest. Because #MamaNeedsSleep. See below for more details on the contest.

Also, we have some coveted tips from Dr. Harvey Karp to help your baby sleep better:

  • White noise is helpful to get your baby to sleep. While Karp recommends "shushing" as part of his "5 S's" method to get the baby's attention and help sooth crying, white noise is better for sleep. However, there are different types of white noise. For sleep, it is better to use a lower pitched rumbling white noise.
  • The ideal room temperature is around 70 degrees. There are simple ways to check babies temperature cues, such as feel the ears to make sure they don’t feel cold, or if the back of the neck is warm and sweaty - that’s a sign baby is too warm.
  • There are a lot of swaddle options out there that some have additional benefits, such as Little Lotus which helps regulate the baby’s temperature. If a baby is too hot or too cold when they are sleeping it can disrupt their sleep. Overly hot or cold can even be dangerous.
  • “Never wake a sleeping baby” is not true, says Karp. If baby falls asleep in your arms or while nursing it is a good idea to wake them a bit when you lay them down to sleep. If you transition baby directly from your arms to sleeping in a crib, when baby wakes they will be disoriented and it can be upsetting. However, if you transition them into the crib and then wake them a bit so they are alert for a few seconds before they fall back to sleep, then when baby wakes in the middle of the night they are more likely to be able to soothe themselves back to sleep.
  • It's ok to let the baby fall asleep while nursing or in your arms. Parents are often told "don’t let baby fall asleep while nursing or in your arms." However Karp says, these are precious moments and experiences that baby will grown out of before you know it, so it’s okay to enjoy these moments. When you lay baby down, just wake them a bit again, so they learn to self sooth and fall back to sleep.

Not only did he survive, but he was then adopted by a family in Chicago, where he now lives. This week, Nathan turned 4 years old, and is a happy and thriving little boy.

Embrace Spotlight: Roopa

Dear Little Lotus Community,

I am here today to share the story of Roopa, who gave birth to her baby on November 26th, 2014, on a rickshaw in India.

From a village in southern India, Roopa gave birth to her little one much sooner than expected. It was a late autumn night and by the time she was rushed to the clinic, her baby was already well underway. Weighing just above 5 pounds and severely hypothermic, his body temperature hovered at around 89.6 degrees - almost 10 degrees lower than that of a normal newborn. In Roopa’s eyes, there was confusion and fear, but also a mother’s determination.

Roopa and her baby in an Embrace infant warmer

With eight minutes to go before the turn of a new day - just hours after he was born on a rickshaw - Roopa’s baby boy was placed in an Embrace infant warmer. His body temperature quickly stabilized in the next 40 minutes and reached a healthy 98.6 degrees. We hope he stays warm and healthy.

Stories like Roopa’s happen every day around the world. Through the Little Lotus 1:1 model, we aim to help thousands of more vulnerable mothers and babies.

Thank you for your support in making this a reality, and giving hope to parents and babies everywhere.

With love,

Happy New Year From Little Lotus Baby!

Happy 2016 from the Little Lotus family! January marks the start of a new chapter, and is also a great time for reflection. Last year, I met parents and babies from around the world who continued to inspire me to work towards a brighter future and to help vulnerable babies all around the world. Here are a few of the blessings from the year I am particularly thankful for:

Our Kickstarter Campaign

We launched Little Lotus Baby with a Kickstarter campaign last April, and I am humbled by your overwhelmingly positive response. Thanks to you, we surpassed our pledge goal in just a over a month, and with the contributions, raised enough funds to both launch Little Lotus and to help save more than 650 babies in developing countries with the Embrace infant warmer.

Every pledge is a cheer that continues to motivate me on this incredible journey.
